Shippensburg is an exciting town rich in history with unlimited possibilities for the future. From our downtown businesses and charming neighborhoods – to our tree lined streets, parks, and streams. Settled in 1730, it is the oldest community of the Cumberland Valley. Shippensburg is unique from others as it spreads across the Cumberland and Franklin county lines. This home town is a blend of cultures and traditions that make the core of this community extra special.
Shippensburg provides easy access to numerous services and retailers from the heart of the downtown area. We offer excellent educational opportunities from grade school to higher education. Founded in 1871, Shippensburg University sits on a hill that oversees the town just a few blocks from the main street. It is a bachelor and master degree granting institution. It is also the home of the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center that offers top performances, as well as some of the top entertainers in the music industry, both past and present.
Shippensburg has many attractions that entertain visitors through-out the year. There is fine art offered at the SHAPE Art Gallery and a great mix of art and music at The Thought Lot or the Solstice Arts Festival. Multiple parades , Bloomfest (celebrating everything Spring) – The Shippensburg Community Fair (an agricultural fair entertaining 45,000-65,000 visitors each year – ) Shippensburg Corn Festival (a huge street fair with over 250 exhibitors craft vendors, antique car show, free entertainment and fabulous food), Farm to Table dinner (all food locally raised or harvested, cooked and served in an outdoor environment) – and Drop the Anchor (a fun family event) to ring in the New Year on the square in the center of our town.
There is a very active and growing Park and Recreational Advisory Board that continually looks for new and exciting programs for youth and adults of the area. Visit the numerous state, borough, and township parks or hike on the Appalachian Trail. Bring your bikes and ride on the Cumberland Valley Rails to Trails. The scenery is incredible and the memories you make are endless.
The Shippensburg government is constantly working to improve the overall quality of life for our community. We are committed to public safety, strong neighborhoods, and economic growth. Built on a foundation rich on history and spirit, we are working to move forward and thrive.
Shippensburg is strategically located near major highways, allowing you to be in a major metropolitan area, such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh, within two to three hours driving time.
My name is Kathy Coy and I am the newly elected (2018-2022) Mayor of Shippensburg. I am the first female to represent Shippensburg in this governmental role and I am extremely proud to share the SHIP-PRIDE I have for our town. I hope you will visit us soon.
